Manifest Embassy
Inside the worlds of the US Embassy, 1779-1915
Coming Soon!
This digital project will explore and map the culture and growth of U.S. embassy households from the perspective of their occupants in the 19th Century. American diplomatic spaces in this period developed as bureaucratic nurseries; security risks; perpetuators of social and racial inequality; and cultural havens of family life. Through these efforts, the U.S. State Department sought democratic ways to bridge and contrast the prevailing diplomatic culture established by European nations that required a diplomat to represent only the will of his sovereign and imperial aims.

This is a two-part project. The first element is a traditional, archival-based historical monograph, and the second an extensive web-based digital project to include an interactive map, 3D models of buildings, and a podcast.
